Senior Night 1/17/2008

Senior Recognition
In its first senior night in history, The Spartan Wrestling Team recognized four young men with their parents:
Michael Santiago – escorted by his parents Rigo and Royshal Santiago
In his three year career, Michael lettered three times, had 21 wins, 10 pins, and 106.5 team points.
Tighe Connor – escorted by his parents Jim Connor and Cheryl Andrews. In his two year career, Tighe lettered twice had 50 wins, 32 pins, and 240 team points. Tighe served as a captain this year.
Moses Park – escorted by his parents Young and Lisa Lee. In his three year career, Moses lettered three times, had 68 wins, 38 pins, and 339 team points. Moses was the first wrestler in Seven Lakes history to qualify for the Region III tournament. He also served as a Captain this year.
Jordan Hauser – escorted by his father Todd Hauser. In his three year career, Jordan lettered three times, had 84 wins, 43 pins, and 482.5 team points. Jordan currently holds just over ˝ of the single season records.

Varsity V. Brazoswood and Morton Ranch
The team had two very tough tests against both teams especially since we were suffering from a few injuries and a starter out due to grades. We were certainly underdogs in both duals. Morton Ranch is riding high in the saddle as the district front runner right now and they thumped us pretty good. Two shining spots were Halit Dilber avenging any earlier close loss in convincing fashion. Brett Denver also pulled off a beautiful win in an exciting overtime match. The gym was so deafening that we could not hear the buzzer or the referee’s calls. It was awesome for Spartan fans.
Our dual with Brazoswood was first in the evening, but the most interesting. I have therefore saved it for last. We started at 103 pounds and took two forfeits and lost a close one – 12-3 Spartans. We ran into two of their tougher kids and got pinned in both matches – 12-15 Bucs. The meat of the line up for the Spartans came up and we rattled off 4 straight wins. Eric Newton and Brett Denver won by pin. Jordan Hauser went up a weight class to wrestle one of the best 160 pounders in the greater Houston area and destroyed him 14-2. It was now 37-15 Spartans. Sadly, we had to give up three forfeits and got pinned at 215 pounds – 37-39 Bucs. It came down to the final weight class – heavyweight. Halit Dilber was favored for the Spartans, but nerves got the better of him and he was put to his back off the whistle. Most heavyweights can’t get off their back, but someone forgot to tell Halit that. He fought off his back and earned his escape only to get thrown again for 5 points. Halit refused to give up the pin and ended the 1st period down 10-1. My heart has just about come out of my chest at the time (I have the pictures to prove it.) In the second period, Halit focuses and turns and pins his man to secure the Spartan Victory. It was an awesome way to end a dual in an insanely loud Spartan gym. It was fun to pull off the upset at home on our very first senior night. I want to say thank you to all the boys for that one as they all knew I was closing in on a personal coaching milestone. I was going to make it there this year, but it is that much more special to have the boys step up at home and get it done in the face of such adversity. Thank you Spartans!!!

Spartan Wrestling!

The wrestling team has had some great results this year. This
information (plus the accompanying picture) comes to us from Coach
Demarchi...thanks, Coach!

The JV and Varsity @ Episcopal Jan. 10th
The Spartan Wrestling team went back into dual action after the break
against National Wrestling Hall of Fame Coach Steve Leize and his
Episcopal Knights. Both JV and Varsity were getting back into the
swing of workouts and were looking good. We have many things to add
and perfect, but I was over all pleased. It was surely the "Night of
the Pin", as all Spartan victories came by fall. The JV went 6-5 with
all pins. The Varsity came up one match short of victory, but still
showed great improvement.

JV Spartan Wins
John Ravandi Pin
Tyler Unverzagt Pin
Timo Martinez Pin
Chi Yao Pin
Max Chamberlain Pin
Brennan Foo Pin

Varsity Spartan Wins
Moses Park Forfiet
Travis Simnitt Pin
Brett Denver Pin
Tighe Connor Pin (huge win for Tighe)
Jordan Hauser Pin
Halit Dilber Pin

JV and Varsity @ A&M Invitational Jan. 12th
Both Varsity and JV had a good showing at the Tiger Invitational in
at A&M this past Saturday. Not only did the Spartan JV place most of
their entrants, but much more importantly, they all showed great
improvement. I saw some very major corners turned. This is what JV
is all about. Keep working, keep trying, keep fighting, and you will
get better. I was very pleased. Varsity also looked pretty good, but
I saw a bit of slump in our technique. We were just not as sharp as
we should have been. Special Note: Travis Simnitt had a breakout
day. I have been waiting for 2 ˝ years for Travis to figure "It" out.
"It" is always something different for each wrestler and is often
difficult to identify. Whatever Travis' "It" was, he figured it out
and put all of his training together. He looked good in his wins and
losses and absolutely turned a corner. I could not be more pleased.
